    Jaroslav Hašek

    Jaroslav Hašek

A writer, publicist, and journalist, best known as the author of the second most translated book in Czech literature, the famous The Good Soldier Švejk (Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války). In his youth, he became involved with Czech anarchists and gradually rose to a leadership position within their movement. In 1907, he was briefly imprisoned for his anarchist activities. From 1908, Jaroslav Hašek edited the magazine Ženský obzor, and from 1910, the satirical journal Svět zvířat. He contributed to various publications, including České slovo, Čechoslovan, Pochodeň, and Humoristické listy. In 1911, he founded the Party of Moderate Progress Within the Bounds of the Law—a political hoax caricaturing the electoral system—and ran as its candidate. During this period, he co-authored numerous cabaret performances with F. Langer, E. A. Longen, E. E. Kisch, and others, frequently appearing as the lead performer.
