Jiří Hálek

After graduating from DAMU, this Czech actor worked briefly in Ostrava and Mladá Boleslav. He became famous mainly thanks to his roles at Prague’s Činoherní klub, where he appeared in popular plays such as The Strange Afternoon of Dr. Zvonek Burke, Picnic, The Labyrinth and The Captain from Kopník, all directed by the theatre’s co-founder Ladislav Smoček. Audiences were always captivated by his distinctive face and vocal expression. He said farewell to the Činoherní klub stage in 2002 with the role of Šlajs in Smoček’s play Once in the Early Morning (Jednou k ránu). In film, he mostly appeared in supporting roles, for example in The Most Beautiful Age (1968), Mareček, Pass Me the Pen! (1978), Faun’s Very Late Afternoon (1983) and The Explosion Will Be at Five (1984).
