Владислав Ванчура

Vladislav Vančura was a prominent Czech writer, playwright, film director, and screenwriter, originally a physician by profession. As the first chairman of the avant-garde artistic movement Devětsil, he fundamentally influenced interwar culture. His unmistakable literary style, characterized by archaic sentence structure and poetic language, inspired numerous theatrical and film adaptations. His most famous novels include Marketa Lazarová, The End of Old Times (Konec starých časů), and the timeless Summer of Caprice (Rozmarné léto). As a playwright, he became renowned for The Alchemist (Alchymista), Lake Ukereve (Jezero Ukureve), and the theatrical comedy Josefína, all staged by the National Theatre. For young audiences, he created the popular story Kubula and Kuba Kubikula. Vladislav Vančura also worked as a film director, helming movies such as Before Matriculation (Před maturitou) and Faithless Marijka (Marijka nevěrnice).
