GUnaGU

GUnaGU is a cult alternative theatre based in Bratislava, founded in 1985. Originally a student initiative, it evolved into a professional stage with a distinctive authorial voice. Since 1995, its artistic director has been playwright and novelist Viliam Klimáček, one of the leading figures of contemporary Slovak drama. Klimáček writes plays tailored specifically to his actors and usually directs them himself. GUnaGU creates original productions addressing contemporary issues such as relationship crises, (mis)communication, xenophobia, and social tensions. Its style blends poetic imagery with rawness, absurd and dark humour, and bold language. Actors such as Petra Polnišová, Zuzana Šebová, Viktor Horján, Roman Pomajbo, Slávka Halčáková, as well as guest performers including Emília Vášáryová, Zuzana Kronerová, and Milan Kňažko, have appeared on its stage. The theatre won the Bratislava Theatre of the Season award (DOS-ky) twice in a row (2014–2016).
